Human Rights: IGP Warns Police Officers Against Unlawful Detentions

In a strong push for police reform and accountability, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has issued a stern warning to all members of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) regarding unlawful and prolonged detentions.

The IGP emphasized that detaining suspects beyond the legally stipulated period is not only a violation of their fundamental rights but also a threat to public trust in law enforcement.

Upholding Human Rights in Policing

The IGP’s directive highlights the constitutional rights to dignity and personal liberty, as stated in Sections 34 and 35 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. These sections protect citizens from unlawful detention and ensure that every individual is treated with fairness and respect.

According to the IGP, the police must prioritize human rights while carrying out their duties. He warned that any officer who engages in excessive or unauthorized detentions will face serious disciplinary consequences.

Rebuilding Trust Between Police and Citizens

The Nigeria Police Force aims to foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and transparency in its operations. The IGP stressed that unlawful detentions undermine the integrity of the force and weaken public confidence in law enforcement. He urged officers to adhere strictly to the law and ensure that all arrests and detentions comply with due process.

By enforcing these human rights policies, the police hope to build stronger relationships with the communities they serve. This move aligns with the broader vision of a more effective, rights-focused, and people-friendly police force.

What to Do If Your Rights Are Violated

Citizens who experience or witness cases of unlawful detention can report them to the appropriate authorities:

Final Thoughts

The IGP’s directive is a major step towards protecting human rights and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force operates within the law. As citizens, we must also play our part by staying informed and reporting any abuse of power. A safer society is built on mutual trust and respect between law enforcement and the people.
