“It’s Unfair to Be Married to Just One Woman” — RMD Sparks Reactions with Polygamy Comment

Veteran Nollywood actor, Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD), has stirred the internet with a bold take on polygamy, declaring that it may be unfair for a man to be married to just one woman.

Appearing on Curiosity Made Me Ask, hosted by skit maker Bae U Barbie, the actor was asked if he feels it’s fair to be committed to just one woman, considering the number of women attracted to him.

RMD replied:

“I don’t [know how many women want me]… but I think it is unfair to be married to just one woman. My father had five [wives].”

The actor’s statement has since gone viral, igniting conversations across social media about marriage, loyalty, and tradition.

Many netizens pointed out that RMD, who is married to TV personality Jumobi Adegbesan, was likely speaking from personal nostalgia rather than an actual desire to practice polygamy. The couple have been married for over two decades after he lost his first wife, May Ellen ‘MEE’ Mofe-Damijo, in 1996.

While some applauded his honesty and referenced African traditions where polygamy is common, others felt his comment could be misleading or disrespectful in modern marital settings.

“He’s a legend, but this statement might be used by unserious men to justify cheating,” a Twitter user wrote.

“At least he didn’t say men must marry many wives. He just spoke from his own family experience,” another added.

Whether it was a joke or a genuine belief, one thing is certain — RMD has once again reminded us that in Nollywood, the real drama sometimes happens off-screen.
